Kim Komando Explains Rootkits
Digital Goddess Kim Komando, the techie queen of the airwaves, explains rootkits - what they are, why they are such a threat and how you can try to detect and defeat them. Komando is the host of the popular number 9 radio talk show (and number 1 for weekend talk). Rootkits have come to the forefront recently as a result of their use by Sony BMG Music to add invisible, unremovable copy protection to CDs, which in the process exposed millions of users computers to a potentially very virus and hacking threat.
From Komando.com:
A rootkit is not a virus. Rather, it is a small program that burrows into the most basic, most powerful level of Windows. It can then tell Windows it is not there. That makes it impossible for anti-virus and anti-spyware programs to find it.
